Schizophrenia is commonly misunderstood as 'split personality' but it is actually more a disorder of 'split reality'.

Risk Factors

There are some certain risk factors and stressors that can increase the risk of one developing schizophrenia. These factors can equally affect youths and adult populations.

Environmental Factors

  • Urbanicity migration
  • Consuming substance (e.g., cannabis, cocaine, alcohol, tobacco, LSD, etc.)
  • Childhood traumas
  • Infection agents
  • Obstetrical complications
  • Viral infections during thepregnancy period
  • Stress (e.g., head injury, family breakdown or death in a family, negative family atmosphere, bad parenting)

Genetic Factors

  • Parents or relatives having schizophrenia will increase the chances that offspring will be affected
  • Fathers who were 50 years or older at the time of their birth
