Why Should You Write a Letter to Your Past Self

As you look at your reflection in the mirror, you are quick to judge your imperfections. The young soul that stays within aches as it becomes a distant memory over the passing years of constant self-hatred because you can’t move on. 


Writing to the future might be better only for some individuals:

Writing to your future self is a tool for setting ambitious goals, leading to self-fulfillment and growth. For some, however, it creates feelings of anxiety about not being enough.

Writing to your past:

Writing to your past self is highly beneficial. Rosy retrospection refers to recalling a past memory more positively than negatively. In other words, a reframing tool. You were always enough; you just needed the right words that spoke to you like a warm hug. Only you know what they are because that is what you wanted or needed to hear.


How to write?:

Take your time to sit with any emotion that rises, without judgment. Thinking of a specific age and asking loved ones about your past may help if memories seem foggy. Research has also shown that writing about social experiences was far better than lone ones. 


Benefits:

When you write to your past self, you’ll reflect on just how far you have come, as those weaknesses are now a testament of your strength. Look back to this letter during difficult times and you’ll be more appreciative and grounded with the present. Moreover, research has shown it decreases anxiety and depression. Ultimately, you are not late in life but becoming a better version of yourself at your own pace with self-acceptance and letting go of what you cannot control.
