What is Mental Energy?

You wake up, check the time on your phone, feeling groggy and frustrated, and wonder why you need to wake up even after getting 12 hours of sleep, and just checking social media the previous day, doing nothing too exertive. Hear me out. Have you ever heard of mental energy? Mental energy is the ability of the mind to perform cognitive tasks effectively. Your mental capacity might be running low even without you knowing.
Mental energy is frequently confused with being "lazy" or "weak" when it is actually just cognitive overload, take it like a cup filled with water and the tap is still on. According to Psychology Today, they cause brain fog, which makes you remember less, makes you not think effectively and causes emotional dysfunction. Overall, the mind is literally the heart of everything you do, which is an understatement not many are aware of.
If you find this relatable and find it hard to move under the heavy blanket, here are some tips. First, let's focus on physical energy. Some tangible actions you can do consist of grabbing a cup of coffee or tea to have that boost of caffeine, nourish your body by eating healthily or even as simple as getting up to move - going for a short walk, as they always say, you can't shoot a moving target.
An equal partner, mental energy is also vital to focus on. As such, here are some ways to improve it. First, having a good support system, be it your friends or family, is important, as they can be someone you go to and vent to. Humans crave connection. Next, have a positive mindset. This might be cliché, but feeding your mind with gentle, kind words to yourself shapes your mind and, soon, your feelings and emotions, and has a greater impact than we realise. Finally, take a step back in stressful situations. Everyone's nervous system has its own limits. Do not blame yourself for being weak; instead, know your own boundaries for what you can handle.
Ultimately, focus, focus and focus. Focus on yourself, focus on what you can give, focus on being on your own journey. Mental energy is sacred, as it can push you further than you can ever imagine. You might not think of mental energy till burnout happens.
