It may seem that only those blessed with a green thumb can make a garden thrive, but even if you’re a budding plant parent, fret not! For those who are simply looking to spruce up their living environment, there are many low-maintenance indoor plants to choose from!
What to consider when getting an indoor plant
Before choosing your plant, there are many factors that you should keep in mind! Figuring out the environmental conditions in your home allows you to find the right plant. Such conditions include the amount of sunlight present, the amount of space you have and how often you can water your plant (National Parks, 2023). It is also important to select your plant carefully before bringing it home. A healthy plant should not have excessive dead leaves, brown tissue, or mushy roots (Judd, Imboden, 2019). Having these considerations helps make your plant-caring journey smoother!
Snake Plant
For beginners to plant-caring, this plant is right up your alley! It comes in many varieties and requires little effort to take care of. It only needs to be watered every once a month when it is dry while overwatering can kill the plant (Marquesen, 2023). This hardy plant can grow at any light level, but direct sunlight can cause it to burn.
Pros: Ideal for busy or new plant carers, Purifies indoor air, Able to easily withstand Singapore’s tropical climate
Cons: May face pest challenges such as spider mites
Sunflowers
This plant is easier to care for than many expect. Direct sunlight and regular watering (once a week) are all it takes to take care of sunflowers. In Singapore’s hot weather, however, the plant may wilt, so you would need to increase the number of times you water it accordingly (National Parks, 2023).
Pros: Brighten up the environment, Relatively insect-free, Able to harvest sunflower seeds
Cons: Strong wind may damage the plant as it grows taller
Tillandsia stricta
While its name may seem imposing, it is another relatively simple plant to take care of! This variety of air plants enjoys bright and indirect light, which is perfect for indoors! As air plants absorb water through their leaves, you must soak the entire plant in water for 30 minutes once or twice a week. An important habit is to shake any excess water off after soaking to prevent plant rot (Lee, 2019).
Pros: Takes up little space, Able to withstand Singapore’s high humidity levels, Promotes air circulation
Cons: Prone to rot
With these easy-to-maintain plants, you no longer have to worry much about their survival! We can all be plant moms or dads, connecting to nature in the comfort of our homes.
