Imagine a world in which humans turn a blind eye to climate change. The air is thick, hot and polluted with the upward shifts in global temperatures, and extreme weather has led coastal regions to the verge of destruction. Food and water security is threatened, increasing prices and causing diseases to soar exponentially. Natural disasters, droughts and storms increase, posing hazards to ecosystems and livelihoods and severely impacting homes and jobs. In the present, we are at a pivotal moment where our actions define the future. As individuals and as a community, we can each do our part to protect our environment by implementing sustainable practices in our daily lives.
If you are wondering, what is environmental sustainability anyway? Well, it refers to maintaining an ecological balance while supporting the requirement for both present and future generations’ wellbeing through conserving resources and protecting biodiversity. A sustainable practice concerns actions we can take to ensure environmental sustainability. These practices aim to reduce waste, promote resource conservation and reduce our carbon footprint.
So, how can communities encourage the implementation of sustainable practices? Communities can incorporate sustainable practices while boosting their social wellbeing in so many enjoyable ways!
Raising Awareness
Educating our community on environmental sustainability is the first step toward building cognisance of the hazards of environmental degradation. This can include workshops, events and campaigns.
Community Gardens
Already a popular concept, community gardens are a great way to cultivate community connections while growing veggies and fruits sustainably, guaranteeing freshness and quality. Furthermore, planting trees and shrubs is also a way to beautify the area and build a greater sense of belonging within your estate.
Community recycling initiatives
These can include community compost programs and the installation of community recycling bins in accessible areas to encourage people to recycle their waste.
‘Re-use’ initiatives
Organising programmes for people to swap clothes, plants and preloved items with others is a great way to encourage the re-use of an item that no longer brings you joy. Thrift store pop-ups are also sustainable ways to ensure that preloved items find a new home instead of being discarded in a landfill.
