WHAT MAKES A MEMORY LAST?

Can you recall some of your favourite childhood memories? These memories tend to be surprising and significant events. (Staller, 2020). They are long-lasting and collectively help represent who we are. (Almaraz-Espinoza, Grider, 2023).

WHY CREATE MEMORIES?

Creating positive memories as a family helps us spend quality time together and share moments. Recalling these memories gives opportunities to talk about children’s life experiences, especially emotional ones. By describing their emotional events and explaining the causes of their emotions to them in detail, they can better understand and regulate their emotional experience. Our children’s ability to cope with emotional memories is reflected in higher-quality relationships with their peers and fewer emotional and behavioral difficulties. (Fivush & Salmon, 2023). Family time is also an avenue to inculcate values like honesty, compassion and respect. These values help to mold our children’s personalities and direct their course in life. (Vega Schools, 2024).

HOW TO CREATE MEMORIES?

  1. Set aside time for family activities like baking cookies for the holidays, playing card games or going to the park. These activities can develop into rituals that give life something to do, instill purpose, and a feeling of community. Furthermore, family rituals build deeper emotional bonds. A ‘love hormone’ called oxytocin is released to build emotional intimacy, trust, and connection. (Vega Schools, 2024).

  2. Document your daily lives as a family in photos and videos. Collating them into digital or physical photo albums stores memories that can be recalled when they are older. Pictures help us remember the story behind each moment, giving us a sense of belonging and nostalgia. (Memoriku, 2025).

CONCLUSION

Do you have memories that have significantly impacted you? Family time builds ties that uplift our spirits, mold our identities, and provide stability when life’s storms hit. (Vega Schools, 2024). No matter how busy we are, let us remember to set aside time for our children. Your moments together can give them precious memories and lessons that they will carry for the rest of their life.
