Corporate Life and Occupational Disease

Can your nine to five job make you sick? Eyes glued to the screen and shoulders hunched over, this is the sad reality of most office workers in Singapore. Hours turn into days, and before they realise it, backache, neck pain, eye strain and fatigue become part of their lives. But did you know that these seemingly minor aches can possibly be early indicators of occupational diseases?

A recent study by Singapore General Hospital found out that 73% of office workers suffer from various pain issues, this is significantly higher than the global average. These conditions usually happen due to neck pain, often caused by forward head posture when looking at screens for a long time. Shoulder tension, caused by long hours of typing and poor posture. Lower back pain, worsened by long periods of sitting and lack of lower back support.

What signs has your body been giving you lately? Are you constantly massaging your neck after meetings, or stretching your legs at your desk just to ease discomfort? Recognising these symptoms early is the first step toward prevention.

Simple changes can make a big difference in your life. Start by adjusting your screen height, taking short breaks every hour, standing or walking for a few minutes during breaks, and keeping your workspace set up for good posture. Mental health matters too. Managing stress through exercise, hobbies, and open communication can help reduce occupational strain.

Everyone deserves to work in an environment that does not mess with their physical or mental health. In Singapore, employers are not just encouraged but expected to provide safe, ergonomic workspaces and proper wellness support. If you feel any discomfort or fatigue that’s affecting your work, speak up. Taking care of your well-being at work isn’t just important, it shows self-awareness and self-respect too.
