Have you heard the phrase ‘Digital Hygiene’ before? Digital Hygiene, sometimes referred to as Cyber Hygiene, is a set of habits and practices that keep your digital life safe, clean, and resilient. (Digital Hygiene, 2026) It’s similar to brushing your teeth to avoid cavities - keeping yourself safe in order to curb any disastrous effects in the future. So, how ‘clean’ are you online? Let’s find out together with our quiz!
Do you create secure Passwords for your online accounts? This means having a password that’s at least:
12 characters long
Includes both upper- and lower-case letters
Includes numbers and symbols (if possible)
Avoids common keyboard paths (e.g. QWERTY)
Bonus points if you create the passwords yourself instead of picking the ones generated by the website/platform, and another bonus point if you have different passwords for different types of accounts. (Kaspersky, 2026)
Do you turn on 2-Step Factor Authentication (2-Step FA)?
This looks like having to key in your usual username and password, but also something else.
This could be a time-based one-time password or having another identifying factor such as biometrics before you are able to be logged onto your account.
This protects you as if you ever have your password found out, your account can still be saved as most would not be able to get into the second layer of authentication. (What Is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)? | Microsoft Security, n.d.)
Have you set up your phone to block suspicious activity?
Most phones will have a ‘Security and Privacy’ function in their settings.
Check out what your phone’s security functions do and turn on what seems relevant to you. (e.g. App Security Checks, Autoblockers, etc.) (Use Security and Privacy Settings on Galaxy Phones and Tablets, 2024)
Have you updated your software (on all your hardware) to their latest versions?
Updating your software frequently not only helps to improve the performance of the software itself but also helps to patch security flaws and keeps your data better protected. (Hetler, 2022)
Finally, do you ensure the content you share online does not disclose any personal information?
While we feel the need to share our lives online, it is important to ensure we aren’t spilling too many secrets
For example, tagging live locations can expose yourself to risks such as others following/stalking you.
Even pictures taken at random moments can hide loads of information, especially if important documents/notable locations happen to be in view. (The Dangers of Oversharing: Quick Privacy Tips to Stay Safe, n.d.)
How did you do? If you’ve said yes to most of these questions, congratulations! Your digital hygiene is pretty decent. If you’ve said no to most of these, take some time to set up a 2-step FA or check that your passwords aren’t just ‘PasswordQWERTY123’. While this list is not exhaustive, it’s good to have the basics down before moving onto more advanced security measures such as VPNs and Virus Blockers. In our current digitalized world, it is important to remember that every little bit of security helps keep you safer online.
