How to Handle Body and Self-esteem Issues During Motherhood

Matrescence is the transition period into motherhood, and, like other life transitions, it can be immensely challenging, physically and mentally.
Motherhood is immensely difficult, as you suddenly center your life around a brand-new human and have to adapt quickly.
Another less-discussed change is the impact on your body and the self-esteem issues that accompany it.
Many mothers simply do not have such time or financial freedom. Pregnancy is stressful to a woman’s body and often leaves physical reminders such as stretch marks, loose skin, or scars that can last for years after giving birth.
There may also be an overall decrease in mobility and physical abilities, and impacts on quality of life.
For many mothers, distress and frustration set in emotionally. These feelings are normal. Taking time for yourself is important.
It would be good for new mothers to practise the following:
Be self-compassionate and accept yourselves as human beings
Physical and emotional changes during motherhood are a normal part of the experience, and there is no need to feel ashamed. Instead, take pride and find joy in being a mother!
Talking to other mothers / joining support groups
Meeting people with similar experiences to yours can help you feel understood and supported, and remind you that you are not alone in your journey.
Realise that you have created life, which is very noble
You have carried a child in you for nine months and brought new life into this world – that is not easy and is an achievement worth celebrating! Pat yourself on the back for taking on this new role as a mother.
Sharing the emotional, domestic, and financial load with your partner and support system(s)
Remember that you don’t have to do this alone – seek comfort and support from your loved ones around you – this eases the physical and mental toll on yourself.
