Networking Skills

Networking helps you stay on top of the latest trends and gain access to the necessary resources that will help further your career goals and development.

Do Research
  • The more you know what to expect, the less uncertainty you'll face

  • Learn as much as you can about the attendees and identify the types of events the organiser hosted previously to understand the profile of previous audiences

Come Up With A List Of Go-To Conversation Starters
  • Introduce yourself with a unique and relatable anecdote (e.g., a one-liner or story about what you are passionate about, what your company does)

  • Rehearse opening lines that can be used when meeting new people

  • Brush up your knowledge of current affairs or trends which are relevant to the conference

Go With A Friend
  • If showing up alone is your biggest obstacle, invite someone to make the environment seem more familiar so that you will feel less stressed

  • If you feel uncomfortable or find difficulty in boasting about yourself or your firm’s achievements, you and your friend can help each other out

Arrive Early

It is relatively less daunting to network in smaller groups at the beginning, than trying to network and join a group where everyone already seems to know one another

Go In With An Open Mind Without A Strict Agenda
  • Go with an open mind and think of the networking event as an opportunity to make a new friend

  • Be comfortable and authentic, which leads to a higher likelihood of building stronger connections

Stay In Touch
  • Send an email or connect with your connection on LinkedIn

  • Prepare ways for attendees to easily keep in touch with you (e.g., bring business cards, physical copies of your CV, QR code or a link to your LinkedIn profile for people to reach you easily)
