The Importance of Scheduling

Time blocking

In a fast-paced world that uses technology platforms to run efficiently, the presence of the very same platforms can distract us from our tasks and break our focus amidst our work.
  • Time blocking is a time management method that divides your day into chucks of hours at time
  • Each chuck or block is focused on accomplishing a specific task
  • Understanding the cognitive shifting: Alternating between different task uses
  • More prudent to consolidate each task into a few hours blocks, leading to increased flow state

Although there are benefits of time blocking, it might not always be an effective tool.
  • Wrongful estimation of time required for each task can create more stress and pressure
  • Failure to incorporate rest times can lead to fatigue
  • The nature of the task may deem blocking to be less useful, such as memorising information
  • Experimentation and preferences are key!

The importance of learning when and how to stop

Burnout Overview

Challenging ourselves is a good thing, but pushing ourselves too much and for too long can lead to burnout.
What is burnout? A state of emotional, mental, or physical exhaustion due to prolonged stress
It is a chronic condition, unlike the short-term feeling of tiredness after long working hours
When we’re not in a good state of mental or physical health, it affects how we perform in all aspects of our life (work, social, and personal).
How to tell when you might be feeling burned out
  • Cynicism
  • Anger
  • Irritability
  • Lethargy
  • Sense of dread

Symptoms of Burnout

Physical Signs
  • Feeling drained most of the time
  • Change in appetite or sleep habits
  • Frequent illnesses

Emotional Signs
  • Sense of failure and self-doubt
  • Loss of motivation
  • Cynical and negative outlook
  • Feeling helpless and detached

Behavioural Signs
  • Withdrawing from responsibilities
  • Isolating yourself from others
  • Procrastinating, taking longer to get things done
  • Using food, drugs, alcohol, or other substances to cope

Countering Burnout

  • Learning limits and setting expectations
  • Change your approach to managing stress, build resilience
  • It’s important to keep checking in with yourself and keep tabs on how you might be feeling, especially during busy periods. Symptoms leading up to a burnout can be slow, and subtle, but the key to preventing burnout is to catch it early.
  • Even if you do happen to find yourself suddenly overwhelmed, it is perfectly alright to ask for help from others. It is never too late to do so in any situation.
  • Set the right expectations
    • High expectations are good for motivation. However when met with failure, it is important to be able to bounce back

  • Nothing wrong with prioritising health!
  • Know your limits and take responsibility
