The Importance of Art as a Form of Connection

Updated: 3 days ago

Brushstrokes, pencil marks, clay indents - up close, they seem to just be a mere part of a piece of art.  But if we take a step back, we can see how beautifully they are brought together to tell a larger story. Similarly, when we interact with art, either through creating or appreciating it, we are able to feel connected to the larger fabric of humanity. Art essentially serves as a building block for understanding ourselves and the people around us. Let’s explore the ways art influences our identity in relation to the world!

Self: The Individual

Art is a powerful medium for self-expression. Through the creative nature of art, individuals can explore and process their emotions and thoughts as they engage in storytelling (Kniveton, 2017). As these narratives often come from a personal space, individuals then learn to acknowledge and communicate their feelings (Brouilette, 2010). This connection to their inner state ultimately fosters a stronger sense of self.

Community: Friends and Loved Ones

Art acts as a form of social bonding through the creation and sharing of art. We share our personal experiences through art and allow others to learn more about life stories. The way our peers and family perceive our art strengthens their understanding of us, thus building positive relationships through this increased awareness (Nelson, 2017). The process of taking part in art itself can also be a form of social interaction, such as participating in a play or singing in a choir. Communities created, bonds reinforced - art is truly a bridge between people.

World: Global Citizen

Art encourages us to be aware of current issues in the world. In an age of cultural diversity, appreciating art can broaden our horizons as artists from all walks of life bring different insights on their lives and struggles. Tolerance and understanding are developed as we navigate such cultural experiences (Al-Zadjali, 2024). With stronger empathy, we are able to transcend physical divides and foster a more harmonious world where we are all able to relate to each other.

Art is a universal language, not only speaking to us but also allowing us to speak to others. Harnessing its power allows us to be more grounded and connected individuals. Let us imbue our lives with art for a more fulfilling and enriching existence!
