Taking Curiosity Walks

When was the last time you slowed down and truly noticed your surroundings? In a fast-paced country like Singapore, it’s easy to overlook details, as many are constantly running in the rat race to succeed. Consequently, many do not have the time or willingness to pause and slow down. However, a curiosity walk can encourage us to step outside, wonder, and appreciate both the natural and built environments around us from a fresh perspective.
Walking isn’t just good for your body, it’s beneficial for your mind as well. According to HealthHub Singapore, walking regularly can reduce the risk of diseases, improve sleep, and even support mental health. A trend article in the Straits Times also noted that low-intensity, longer walks are especially beneficial for cognition and overall well-being.
To get started, choose a theme for your walk: it could be a heritage trail, a nature walk, an art walk, or simply exploring your neighbourhood! As you walk, record your experience. Bring a camera or your phone and keep a photo journal, or even create a scrapbook of your interesting findings. These activities can deepen your curiosity and help you notice more around you.
A few practical tips: wear comfortable shoes and clothing, bring water, and perhaps turn on some music, though don’t let it drown out the sounds around you. Take it slow. Remember, the goal is to be more aware of your environment, and of course, to enjoy the walk.
Singapore is filled with hidden corners, parks, art pieces, and historic streets. By venturing out and discovering our country in a new way, you’ll not only move your body but also awaken your curiosity and deepen your sense of belonging. So, without hesitation, go on a curiosity walk!
