Doing Things Alone is Okay!

In a world that constantly emphasizes social connection, it can be easy to feel pressured to be surrounded by others. However, doing things alone at times can be incredibly healthy and provides tangible benefits to one's mental health. For example, engaging in activities like studying at a cafe, going for a walk in a park, or even watching a movie alone can strengthen your mental well-being in ways that group activities cannot.

According to Sophie Lazarus, a clinical psychologist, “By taking a brief pause alone, our nervous system can settle, our mind can settle, our body can settle.” Being constantly exposed to stress can negatively impact the immune system, cause inflammation and even lead to elevated blood pressure and blood sugar levels. As such, it is important to take a step back and do things at your own pace. This lets us enjoy activities without having to accommodate others, which creates a sense of calm and control.

People might be afraid of doing things alone, as they might be seen as lonely or unusual, but doing things alone allows you to learn to enjoy your own company. Having such time to yourself will enable you to tune in to your thoughts without the noise of other people’s opinions. This strengthens your sense of identity and boosts self-confidence, because you learn that you can feel fulfilled without relying on constant social validation. This will let you act to prioritise yourself and not be limited to what people might perceive you to be.

In conclusion, choosing to do things alone is not a sign of loneliness or isolation; it is an act of self-care that strengthens your mental health and deepens your understanding of who you are.
